Mt. Lemmon Seed Mix

In 2005, Trees for Mt. Lemmon received a Forest Health-Invasive Species Issues in Arizona grant.
The purpose of the grant was to:

1.      Maintain and protect the unique indigenous plant species found on private properties within the village of Summerhaven and on Mt. Lemmon by preventing the introduction of invasive non-native species to the village and Mt. Lemmon.

2.      Prevent non-native invasive plants from becoming established in areas impacted by the Aspen Fire that are privately owned, which in turn will prevent non-native invasive plants from encroaching onto adjacent National Forest lands of the Coronado National Forest from private properties.

An inventory of the native plant species was undertaken and the list can be seen here.

The mix of plant species was chosen to help in several ways.  Legumes will assist the mountain soil in recovering from the effects of the Aspen Fire by fixing nitrogen.  Grasses and wildflowers will provide much-needed ground cover and a thick root mat just below the soil surface which will help prevent soil erosion.
